Recovering Data from Disk after Format

Data recovery after formatting – a complete technical guide

Learn how to effectively restore files after formatting a drive, pendrive, or memory card while avoiding permanent sector overwriting.

Formatting a storage device is rarely an irreversible process unless full sector initialization (zeroing) has occurred. In most cases, we are dealing with so-called quick formatting, which only overwrites the control structures of the file system, such as the MFT (Master File Table) in NTFS or allocation tables in FAT/exFAT. Physical data recovery after formatting is possible because clusters containing actual data remain intact until they are overwritten by new I/O operations.

However, it is important to distinguish standard logical formatting from low-level procedures (Low Level Format) and full formatting in Windows®, which since Vista performs sector zeroing. In such a scenario, without access to specialized laboratories and magnetic force microscopy techniques, the data must be considered permanently lost. In other cases, the key to success lies in immediately ceasing all write operations to the disk to prevent the lost files from being overwritten. Since reading remains safe, this opens a path for the effective recovery of data that is no longer visible to the user after the operation.

Step 1: Logical analysis and scan parameter configuration

Launch the StrongRecovery tool. If the file system remained the same after formatting, simply select the partition in the selection window. To increase analysis accuracy, it is worth using the advanced mode: right-click on the drive -> Settings -> Damaged. This allows deeper verification of areas where metadata has suffered partial corruption.

If the file system architecture has changed (reformat from FAT32 to NTFS or vice versa), manual redefinition of the search area is required. From the “Settings” menu, choose the previous file system (FAT16/FAT32/NTFS). This enables the program’s algorithm to correctly interpret remnants of old records and file descriptors.

Step 2: Directory structure reconstruction and data export

Starting the scan initiates the sector mapping process. StrongRecovery reconstructs the directory structure in real time based on recovered MFT record fragments and file headers (signatures) recognized by RAW recovery algorithms.

For large volumes, it is recommended to periodically secure progress via Menu -> File -> Save session file. This allows resuming the analysis later without repeating the time-consuming physical scan of the device.

The final data recovery after formatting process is fully non-invasive. The application operates in Read-Only mode, ensuring the integrity of the source medium. Selected resources can be restored while preserving the full folder hierarchy, which is crucial when recovering databases or complex project structures. StrongRecovery efficiently handles a wide range of media, including pendrives, SD cards (High Speed), as well as external HDD and SSD drives.

Effectiveness of logical methods with real examples

It turns out they don’t always succeed. In our tests on a 250 GB “patient drive” after formatting, the popular Disk Drill displayed no directory structure even after more than 2.5 hours of scanning—only raw RAW files. In the same case, StrongRecovery had no issues instantly reconstructing metadata and restoring the original folder tree. This demonstrates that the key to success lies in the algorithm’s ability to interpret file system records, not in the popularity of the brand.

If the medium has not been overwritten with new data, you can avoid hours of signature-based analysis. In StrongRecovery, simply uncheck the "RAW file analysis" option in Disk Settings. The program will then focus solely on logical reconstruction (MFT/FAT), enabling lightning-fast recovery with preserved filenames, without waiting for Deep Scan results.

Definitely not. Chkdsk attempts to repair file system inconsistencies, which after formatting often results in permanently removing “orphaned” entries from the file table. To avoid data degradation, first perform data recovery after formatting using StrongRecovery in Read-Only mode, and only after securing the files on another medium should you attempt system-level partition repair.
